Inmate at Travis County Jail dies after being found unresponsive

An inmate at the Travis County jail has died after he was found unresponsive. 

44-year-old inmate Rene Martinez was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Feb. 19 by a corrections officer conducting post visual checks. 

Another post visual report that was conducted just 30 minutes earlier indicated that nothing was out of the ordinary. 

CPR was initiated by jail personnel immediately upon discovering Martinez as unresponsive. ATCEMS took over CPR when they arrived on the scene but were unable to resuscitate Martinez. He was pronounced dead at 11: 49 p.m.

Martinez was charged with possession of a controlled substance and booked into the Travis County Jail on Feb. 18. 

An investigation including TCSO Internal Affairs Unit, Texas Rangers, TCSO Criminal Investigation Division and the Medical Examiner's Office has been launched as is customary with all death in custody cases.
