Lake Travis firefighter remains hospitalized as collision investigation continues

A Lake Travis firefighter remains hospitalized in stable condition after being involved in a major collision yesterday.

Engineer William Tatsch was driving on FM 620 when he suffered an unknown medical emergency which caused him to lose consciousness. The fire truck struck five other vehicles before rolling onto its side and coming a stop.

Officials say Tatsch has more than 17 years of service and has no history of medical emergencies while driving.

Lieutenant Rachel Zambrano was another Lake Travis firefighter injured. She was riding on the side of the engine and was struck by debris and fire gear in the collision.

Zambrano suffered a concussion and needed stitches. She was released from the hospital yesterday.

Two other firefighters, Brian Baker and Joel Niemeyer, were treated for minor injuries.
