Last minute information for Tax Day

It's April 15th, also known as Tax Day, and if you haven't filed your taxes yet, FOX 7 has some last minute tips and information for you.

To help get your taxes in on time, the U.S. Post Office lobby at Cross Park Drive is staying open until 8:00 tonight. That gives you a little more time to get your taxes done, if you're filing by mail.

If you're using an accountant or doing everything online, get your returns filed as soon as possible. E-file even has free software you can use.

But before you file, you want to make sure you get all your tax credits, including work-related expenses, child care, sales tax on big items, like a new car and home improvement expenses.

Installing alternative energy features in your home can also cut your tax bill. The IRS gives tax credits for solar electric, solar water heating, wind energy, geo-thermal heat pumps, and other qualified energy-efficient home improvements which can also include labor costs.

If you made $60,000 or less, use IRS Free File or IRS E-file.

To avoid penalties or missing out on any deductions, file on time and if you need to, file an extension.

If you end up owing money, here are some tips:

- Pay as much as you can to avoid interest charges.

- Pay online with IRS Direct Pay.

-You can schedule payments online from your account with no additional fees.

- Don't ignore a tax bill.

If you contact the IRS, the agency will work with you.
