Low dose CT scan at Dell Children's Medical Center

Dell Children’s Medical Center is the first pediatric hospital in Texas to use a low dose CT scan.

It only takes half a second to do a complete head scan. That’s about 15 seconds faster than a traditional scan.

The new machines means kids no longer have to hold their breath during the procedure. It also means patients don’t have to be sedated because of the speed in the new technology.

Dell Children’s doctors are excited about the turnaround time on the images which enables to make a diagnosis faster.

Dr. Lori Barr, a radiologist with Dell Children’s says, “Every second does count. And the faster that we can mobilize a surgical team appropriate for the patient's condition, the faster we have the critical care team to accept the patient, if the patient needs to to go to the intensive care unit then the faster they are in the right hands."

The images generated by the low dose scanner are also much clearer than the old CT scans.
