Memorials around Central Texas to honor 9/11 victims

Texans are joining the nation to remember those who lost their lives 14 years ago today in the terrorist attacks that changed this nation, and the world, forever.

14 years ago terrorists hijacked four planes. Two crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon and passengers and crew prevented the fourth from reaching its intended target and crashed it into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  More than 3,000 people died.

Many continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones as the nation vows to #NeverForget.

The Austin Fire Department held a memorial service was held at 7:30 a.m. at Buford Fire Tower on Lady Bird Lake to honor the 343 firefighters in New York City who lost their lives trying to rescue people. The ceremony also paid tribute to Austin firefighters, active and retired, who have passed away in the past year.

Other events are scheduled throughout Central Texas. Police and firefighters in Georgetown held a memorial stair climb at the Georgetown ISD football stadium.

Austin firefighters also held a memorial stair climb at the Pleasant Valley Drill Tower in Austin.

Members of the Emergency Services Pipes and Drums Association will play in the Rotunda of the State Capitol at noon.
