Move Out ATX hosts first official donation drive

Many UT Austin off-campus leases end in July. Students may leave, but their possessions are often left behind, crowding dumpsters and alleyways.

"The stuff would end up in dumpsters, start overflowing end up in the alleyways and a lot of it was really nice furniture and household decor and things that could be given a second life." recalled Madelyn Morgan.

Morgan, a former UT Austin student, now works for the City of Austin's resource recovery department.

Last year, she helped launch a pilot program, a donation drive targeting UT Austin students moving out of their apartments, as their leases end. Students are encouraged to drop off gently used furniture, clothing and other household items.

In exchange students are given stickers that give them discounts to local businesses.

The pilot drive collected over 62 tons of material or nearly twenty two-and-a -half school buses' worth. It's a number Morgan says she hopes to top this year as the first official MoveOutATX drive is taking place.

There are ten drop-off locations near UT's campus.
