Northeast Philadelphia barber spreads awareness for autism

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - A Northeast Philadelphia barber is doing what he can to make a difference. Two of his clients have autism and when he heard how some people have been treating them he decided he had to do something to give a lesson on the golden rule.

Parents like Steven Torres who has two young sons with autism told FOX 29's Bill Anderson that there are challenges that many just don’t get even basic services can be problematic.

“Every barber I’ve ever been to in the City of Philadelphia can’t handle my kids. We’ve had —we’ve had fights," Torres said. “He actually has the patience of a saint to deal with kids with special needs."

The day was a celebration of the Au-Some Torres boys and a fundraiser for Autism awareness. It was all inspired by the boys’ barber Joe who wanted to get more involved the more he got to know them.

“The two young clients that I did this for, the Au-Some Torres boys, Steven is 9 and Nicholas is 7, just in the past year and a half the family opened up, everybody opened up and I wanted to give the kids something," barber Joe Andris said.

Most people are familiar with the quote that nobody can help everyone but everybody can help someone and that’s pretty much the inspiration for whats taking place—just do what you can to help.

All of the money generated is going to research and awareness.
