Officer-involved shooting in North Austin leaves two injured

Austin Police have a second officer-involved shooting on their hands in less than two days.

Officers were dispatched at 10:35 a.m. to a disturbance call Sunday morning to the 4000 block of Green Hill Place. Interim Police Chief Brian Manley said a caller told dispatch a man and a woman were shouting and they heard a man say he had a gun and was going to use it. Another person called 911 and stated they received a suicide not from a man who lived in that residence.

Officers arrived on scene at 10:41 a.m.

According to Chief Manley, after reviewing the officer’s body camera the suspect, a 59-year-old white man, was advancing towards the officer with a knife. On the footage Chief Manley said the officer can be seen retreating and giving the suspect demands to drop his weapon.

“Our officer at this point is heard yelling multiple times to, drop it, drop it, put it down, giving multiple commands,” said Manley. “The suspect doesn’t appear to say anything to the officer but continues to walk toward him not heading his commands. .. continues to advance towards our officer at which point our officer begins to fire at the suspect. The suspect is struck, he does go down, right in front of the residence at the street. “

Another officer arrives and can been seen removing the knife and apply first aid to the suspect. Manley said the officers then find a 69-year-old white man with multiple stab wounds on the floor near the door.

Both were sent to the hospital. The suspect was reported Sunday morning in serious but stable condition and the victim of the stabbing in critical but stable condition.

The relationship between the two is unknown during initial investigation and the department is reviewing the suicide note.“I’ll take the opportunity to remind everyone that as we go in to the holiday season this is a time where some folks they suffer from depression whether or something reach out to them, make a connection to them or if you are concerned that they are not in a good spot then connect them with resources,” Manley said.

The officer is an 8 year APD veteran he has been placed on administrative leave.

“I think it’s very unfortunate that here we are yet again just a couple of days after we were talking to you about a tragic incident that took place down in central Austin where someone lost their life and again there’s no indication that anything led to either of these as common or connected.”
