Officials: Fatal shooting appears to be self-defense

A shooting in North Austin left a 21-year-old man dead on Saturday after police say it appears another man fired in self defense.

Officials responded to calls of shots fired at a parking lot at 1070 Mearns Meadow Blvd. around 5 p.m. When officials arrived, Darwin Jimenez was found with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m.

According to investigators, it appears Jimenez and a group of men were sitting inside a car in the parking lot when they began yelling at a man. Police say the man ignored them and continued to pull into a parking spot. The man then exited his car and Jimenez and the group drove up to him.

Police say that's when Jimenez and another man got out of the car and Jimenez began firing. The man ran back to his car, found his own handgun and returned fire, hitting Jimenez.

Police say the male who returned fire was a concealed handgun license holder and that the men didn't know each other. The man and others involved are cooperating with police. Police say the incident appears to be self defense. The case remains under review.
