One dead after car runs through light pole in East Austin

A neighborhood in East Austin was awakened by a fatal crash that ended with a car on someone's front yard overnight.

Police say they received several different calls from residents reporting a crash around 12:20 Thursday morning.It happened in the 3300 block of Northeast Dr., near Manor Rd.

When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle had crashed on the front yard of a home on the street. Police believe the car was coming down the block and then lost control, hit the curb and went through the light pole.

Austin fire and medics had to remove both the driver and the passenger. The passenger was pinned underneath the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver had to be taken to Dell Seton Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Many residents were left without power since the car hit a light pole. Austin energy came out shortly after to restore power.
