An image of a depressed dog at an animal shelter has gone viral, tugging at the heart strings of animal lovers everywhere.

A black lab, believed to be named Cash was left at the shelter by his owners 24-hours prior to the photo being taken according to Tammy Graves, founder of The Haley Graves Foundation in North Carolina.

The now viral photo, shows the dog huddled up facing a wall, apparently in a puddle of urine.

Graves shared the photo in a plea for responsible pet ownership, and she said in the post that the shelter housed 275 dogs that were “barking to be freed” and urged people to adopt.

"It smells like death, and doors are banging shut all the time. Animals walk by and never return. And he has no idea his fate. All he knows is he didn't ask to be here. He didn't even ask to be born to irresponsible owners," she wrote.

Cash is currently on a medical hold while she is treated for heartworms and parasites. She will soon be up for adoption.
