Pink Moon: Here's what to know about the colorfully named full moon on Friday
LOS ANGELES - The full Pink Moon will be lighting up the night sky on Friday, but the lunar event won’t actually be pink.
The moniker for this month’s full moon comes from the earliest widespread flowers that bloom in the spring called wild ground phlox. The flowers are pink in color, which is why the moon gets its name, according to Farmer’s Almanac.
Other names for April’s full moon are full Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon and full Fish Moon.
Full moon names were applied to the entire month in which they occurred to help Native American tribes keep track of seasons.
For example, the names for the moons in May and June are the Flower Moon and Strawberry Moon, respectively. May’s moon means that flowers are everywhere and June’s moon signifies the time for harvesting strawberries.
The Pink Moon will be fully visible around 4:12 a.m. PST and 7:12 a.m. EST.
