Police have identified a man who was killed by officers hours after he allegedly shot a St. Louis police sergeant as 19-year-old George P. Bush III.

The officer was shot Sunday night when a vehicle pulled alongside his SUV. The suspect fired two shots that struck the 46-year-old officer in the face. Police Chief Sam Dotson called it an "ambush."

The officer was released from a hospital Monday morning.

Police say Bush began shooting at officers who converged on him around 12:30 a.m. Monday. A St. Louis officer and an FBI Task Force officer returned fire, killing Bush. No officers were hurt in that exchange.

Court records show Bush had one previous case on file. He was charged with resisting arrest and creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death in October 2015. But Dotson says he was wanted for questioning for a number of recent violent crimes, including a homicide.

The St. Louis police officer shot in what the chief describes as an "ambush" has been released from the hospital.

Police say the 46-year-old sergeant was released Monday morning after being treated for two gunshot wounds to the face. His name has not been released but police say he is a veteran of nearly 20 years with the department and a married father of three.

Police say the officer was in his marked police SUV Sunday night, waiting at a red light, when a vehicle pulled alongside and a 19-year-old suspect opened fire.

The suspect initially got away. Police say that as officers approached him early Monday, he shot at them. A St. Louis officer and an FBI Task Force officer returned fire, killing the suspect. Police say a Kansas City-area officer who was shot Sunday night is out of surgery and expected to make a full recovery after rehabilitation.

The Gladstone Police Department posted the announcement on its Twitter page Monday morning.

The unnamed officer was shot after a passenger jumped out of a vehicle and fled during a traffic stop in the suburb just north of Kansas City, Missouri, around 10:35 p.m.

The officer chased the fleeing passenger and sustained a non-life threatening wound.

The suspect was fatally wounded in the encounter, but it's unclear who pulled the trigger.

Missouri Gov.-Elect Eric Greitens is pledging tougher penalties for attacks on police officers, and he wants an alert system to help track down suspects in police assaults.

The Republican issued a statement Monday, a day after police officers in St. Louis and the Kansas City area were injured in shootings. Both officers are expected to survive. The suspect in the Gladstone shooting was killed during a struggle with the officer. The suspect in the St. Louis shooting was killed hours later in a shootout with police.

Greitens says he will work with the Legislature to establish a "Blue Alert" system that would send out emergency notices in an effort to expedite the capture of anyone who shoots a police officer. The system would be similar to alerts sent when a child is abducted or a senior citizen is missing.

Greitens defeated Democrat Chris Koster in the Nov. 8 election and takes office in January.

A man wanted in several violent crimes and suspected of critically wounding a St. Louis police sergeant is dead after a shootout with officers.

Police Chief Sam Dotson says the 46-year-old officer was alone in his police SUV around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when the suspect pulled alongside and fired at least two shots unprovoked. The officer was struck twice in the face but is expected to survive.

Dotson says police tracked down the suspect early Monday in the neighborhood where the shooting happened. As police converged, officers say he shot through the windshield of another police car, missing both occupants, then fired at other officers.

Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, who was about 19.

The suspect's name has not been released. Dotson says he was wanted for questioning for a series of crimes that included robberies, a carjacking and perhaps a killing.

Police believe the man shot the officer because he feared being recognized.

Police say a suspect has been killed and an officer wounded near Kansas City, Missouri, after the suspect pulled out a handgun during a struggle.

Kansas City police said in a statement that the shooting happened Sunday night after a passenger ran from a vehicle that Gladstone police stopped for a traffic violation. Police say officers chased down the passenger who pulled out a handgun. Shots were fired, although the release didn't say whether an officer or the suspect pulled the trigger.

The suspect was fatally wounded and an officer sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police described the suspect only as a white male in his late teens.

The shooting came on the same day a San Antonio officer was fatally shot and a St. Louis officer was critically wounded.
