Scammers pose as San Marcos Police Department

The City of San Marcos is warning residents about a new scam where a caller "spoofs" the San Marcos Police Department's phone number.

The city says a victim of the scam got a call from what appeared to be the SMPD's phone number, 512-753-2108. The victim even researched the number to make sure it was the police department.

The scammer told the victim they had an outstanding warrant for unpaid medical bills and needed to pay immediately. The victim then agreed to send almost $300 to the scammer.

The city is now reminding residents they will never call and demand payment over the phone and that people should never give out credit, debit or gift card information over the phone to someone unfamiliar.

The city says for people to contact the police department if they suspect they have been a victim of a scammer at 512-753-2108.
