Suspect in Akins High School threat identified, out of jail

The Travis County Sheriff's Office has released court paperwork identifying the 17-year-old suspect in the Akins High School terroristic threat. It also provides more details into what happened.

The suspect has been identified as Ariel Alex Ramirez Navarro. Navarro is accused of making threats which forced Akins High School to be placed on lockdown. He has been charged with the offense of making a terroristic threat which is a third degree felony.

According to the paperwork, just after 9 a.m a sergeant with the Austin Independent School District Police Department says he was on duty when he overheard a call over dispatch about a former student that was on the Akins High campus who had made threats to shoot up the school.

The sergeant responded to the scene and met with a school resource officer and Akins Principal Brandi Hosack. Hosack and the officer said they had received information from juvenile witnesses who had just gotten off the bus and said another former student had displayed some weapons and ammunition and threatened to shoot up and bomb the school.

Hosack said the suspect was positively identified as Navarro. Navarro was enrolled at Akins but wasn't enrolled currently due to lack of attendance.

The campus was placed into an emergency shelter in place while officers attempted to locate Navarro. Navarro was not found on campus.

The paperwork states that the witnesses told officers that Navarro had opened up his bag and displayed "an ammunition clip, a box of ammunition and smoke grenade bombs."

The witnesses then said they asked Navarro what he was going to do with the items in his backpack and they said his response was, "I'm gonna shoot up and blow up the school."

Because of what they saw and heard, the witnesses say that's why they came forth and told school administration.

Navarro was ultimately located at the South Park Meadows Shopping complex.

Officers were able to locate Navarro's backpack and the paperwork says they did find inside it loaded magazine(s), ammunition and smoke/incendiary device(s).
