Texas AG says banning guns in dorms may violate new law
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The attorney general of Texas says banning guns in college dorm rooms likely violates the state's "campus carry" law, which is set to take effect next summer.
The opinion was issued late Monday by Attorney General Ken Paxton. It comes barely a week after a panel at the University of Texas' flagship Austin campus recommended barring concealed handguns in dorms and at sporting events.
That same panel also recommended allowing concealed guns inside classrooms.
The law requires public universities to designate specific areas where people with concealed handgun permits can carry their weapons.
In a flurry of other opinions, Paxton also opined about carrying guns into courthouses.
And he backed $200 million-plus in vetoes by first-year Gov. Greg Abbott, whose line-item spending cuts were challenged by Texas' nonpartisan budget board.
