Travelers at ABIA keeping an eye on 'Bomb Cyclone' delays
The website "Flight Aware" is reporting there have been more than 2,000 delays within, into or out of the U.S. today and more than 4,000 cancellations as of about 3:30 Thursday afternoon.
At ABIA, there were about 10 flights canceled as of about 3:30 Thursday afternoon. If you're headed to New York or Philly you may be out of luck.
It's being called the "Bomb Cyclone." And it's wreaking havoc on the East Coast, bringing hurricane-force wind gusts, coastal flooding and snow.
The storm is being blamed for two deaths in North Carolina.
Back here in Austin, travelers kept an eye on the departures and arrivals on Thursday.
Kristin Pawelek along with her husband and two kids spent the holidays in San Antonio with family. When it was time to head back home to Maine on Wednesday, their flight was a no-go.
"We got some text messages from Delta saying that our first flight was canceled and we had to stay another night," Pawelek said.
The flight was re-booked for Thursday afternoon. But their connecting flight from Atlanta to Boston was delayed. "Essentially we were supposed to get home last night and we won't be home until tomorrow afternoon if we make it home because that's the only flight that they have from Atlanta to Boston...so they'll probably cancel that as well," Pawelek said.
The "Bomb Cyclone" is unfortunately adding hundreds of dollars to their trip.
"Delta's been good about re-booking but because of the weather they don't provide hotels so we have to find a hotel for two nights, maybe even three. And then Enterprise of course we had to extend our rental car...same thing 'oh well,'" she said.
Kristin and her family love living in Maine, it's just getting there that's the problem.
"I think we're okay. I mean if this is the worst that happens it's not too bad," she said.
The Austin-Bergstorm International Airport is encouraging passengers to stay in contact with their airline about schedules and re-bookings.
