TxDOT proposes plan to add two express lanes along I-35
AUSTIN, Texas - The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce Regional Growth Summit teamed up with TxDOT and local leaders Monday and announced a plan to add two express lanes along Interstate Highway 35, in an effort to assist with congestion issues.
According to the press release TxDOT, Sen. Kirk Watson and other local officials announced the plan Monday to add the express lanes in each direction along 33 miles of I-35 from RM 1431 Round Rock to SH 45 Southeast near Buda as part of a project called Capital Express.
In addition, the proposal includes lowering I-35 through downtown Austin and possibly removing the upper decks from MLK Boulevard to Airport Boulevard.
“We only get one shot to rebuild and improve I-35 through downtown Austin, so we have to do as much as is reasonable within the existing footprint to enhance mobility and lower it,” said Senator Kirk Watson. “I want to thank TxDOT for continuing their hard work and honoring what’s important to our community.”
TxDOT said they are evaluating ways to phase the construction in order to allow for the most mobility improvements without limiting future enhancements. In addition, TxDOT said they're first focusing on downtown Austin because it's where they feel improvements are needed most.
“Addressing congestion along I-35 is a top priority for the Austin District,” said TxDOT District Engineer Terry McCoy. “I-35 is a critical path through Austin and serves as our state’s main thoroughfare for goods and services. This project will ensure reliability when drivers need it most.”
The project also includes improvements like longer entrance and exit ramps, intersection bypass lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
According to the press release, many financing options are being considered by officials. Options include federal loans, state and local transportation dollars, and debt financing.
Construction could begin as early as 2021 pending an environmental decision.
TxDOT said input from previous I-35 meetings, open houses and workshops will be included in the new project. Community members will be able to provide additional input at open houses scheduled for Spring 2018.
