UT students start effort to reignite A&M rivalry game
AUSTIN, Texas - UT student body leaders are on a mission to bring back the UT and A&M rivalry game and they need your help. Wednesday, they will activate a voting website for students. Alumni - you're next!
Micky Wolf was a born a longhorn.
"I'm a 3rd generation longhorn. I used to cry when UT lost football games,” said Wolf.
A game particularly important to him and his family was when UT and A&M played on Thanksgiving. He remembers exactly where he was when they last met.
"I can remember 2011 when Justin Tucker kicked the last field goal that left us with hopefully not an eternal victory, but a victory until now,” said Wolf.
Captiol City A&M Club President-elect Amy Morris was there.
"That last three seconds we were almost going to win it and then we didn't and it was a sad right home to Austin,” said Morris.
For both Thanksgiving games just haven't been the same.
"As a student, I think there's something our football season has always missed,” said Wolf.
"I want it back because it's a piece of Texas football history you know, over 100 years-worth of games played. We were definitely on the losing side of that, but it was always fun,” said Morris.
In his weekly press conference Texas coach and alumn Tom Herman expressed his support.
"I do think you're eventually going to see that game again. When that happens, you're guess is as good as mine,” said Herman. "Anytime the student body rallies around a cause I think you know the powers that be listen."
Wolf and the student body president will launch a website Wednesday called utexasvote.org to see if others are just as passionate about a re-match.
"From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. it will be open voting and will be part of our larger movement of data collection to really say this is what students are thinking. Eventually we'll be collecting data about what alumni are thinking so that we can really go far way in bringing the game back,” said Wolf.
Wolf will present that data to UT President Greg Fenves and Athletic Director Mike Perrin.
Wolf knows it's a stretch as non-conference games are booked out years in advance.
He's shooting for 2025.
"We know this is something that I won't get to experience as a student, but something that I'll definitely come back as an alumni and be proud to see happen,” said Wolf.
