Williamson County marks completion of alternative downtown Georgetown route

Williamson County is marking the completion of an alternative route in downtown Georgetown.

Officials say after seeing the current and potential future growth in populations, it is time for the city to expand its highways.

Williamson County and city of Georgetown officials officially broke ground on the project on Sept. 29, 2023, with an anticipated completion date of summer 2025.

The project connects Sam Houston Avenue/Patriot Way to SH 29 with a two-lane road and a bridge over SH 130.

Corridor 6 is the last step in creating an alternative route to University Avenue in Georgetown and serves as the final link for an east-west bypass to SH 29.

The project was funded through the voter-approved 2019 Williamson County road bond and funding from the city of Georgetown not to exceed $4 million in construction costs.

Williamson County saw an almost 40% population increase between 2010 and 2019 and officials say the current growth requires additional roadway infrastructure to keep pace with the increased number of residents and vehicles.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in Georgetown.
