Wimberley dogs on their way to Westmister Dog Show
Two of Wimberley's four-legged citizens are taking center stage next week at the Westminster Dog Show in New York City.
It's the dog show that tops them all. Westminster starts this Saturday in Madison Square Garden. Competing in that show are Wimberley's very own, Wiggle and Jag.
“It's always exciting when you get that email that said you made it,” Sharon Rives, trainer, said.
It's not the first time for Rives. It is Jag and Wiggle's first time. This is the first year Jag's breed, the Miniature American Shepherd can compete.
“They're not really competing against each other but they're competing to see who is the closest one to their breed standard,” Rives said.
Three-thousand dogs from all 50 states will be there. Everything is taken into consideration, from how they are groomed, to agility. Wiggle and jag are competing in the conformation contest on Monday. Rives is confident in her dogs, especially wiggle.
“She just gets this change in her demeanor and she knows she is just first in line and it's neat to see,” Rives said.
Rives has been showing dogs for a long time. It's a hobby passed down generations in her family.
“I've been showing dogs since I was four years old so Westminster is always the epitome of the year for competition,” she said.
Right now the dogs are doing their last bit of practicing and preparing, but rives believes showmanship and perseverance are traits that they possess, that can't be rehearsed.
“The dogs just have to have that little magical sparkle, it's just something inside of them, they have to want it just as much as I want it,” she said.
The Westminster winner will be announced Tuesday night.
