Winter weather: Warming centers, shelters opening throughout Central Texas

Due to winter weather, several warming centers throughout Central Texas will be activated.

A warming shelter at the Calvary Episcopal Church, 1028 Main Street, will be open starting Sunday, Jan. 19, from 7 p.m. - 7 a.m.

Comal County

New Braunfels

The City of New Braunfels will be opening three warming centers due to winter weather. 

  • Westside Community Center – 2932 South I-35 Frontage Road – Phone: 830-221-4630Open Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staffed by the New Braunfels Fire Department and NB CERT members. This facility offers temporary relief from the cold, but is not a shelter. Anyone in need of overnight accommodation should contact the New Braunfels Salvation Army at 830-608-9129.
  • Open Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staffed by the New Braunfels Fire Department and NB CERT members. This facility offers temporary relief from the cold, but is not a shelter. Anyone in need of overnight accommodation should contact the New Braunfels Salvation Army at 830-608-9129.

Hays County

San Marcos

A winter shelter at the Southside Community Center, at 518 S. Guadalupe Street, will be open starting Jan. 20-21. 

The overnight shelter will be from 7 p.m. - 9 a.m. 

During the day, the shelter's gym will stay open until 5 p.m.

Travis County

Austin

According to the city, those who need shelter will need to go to One Texas Center, at 505 Barton Springs Road, from 6-8 p.m. to register for overnight shelter. 

You must register each day you need shelter.

The city said those staying in a shelter overnight Sunday will be able to remain there during the day on Monday, Jan. 20.

Bus routes to the OTC are lines: 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142, 801. Anyone seeking a cold weather shelter who does not have the means to pay the fare will still be given a ride.

The Austin Public Library is also opening three branches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for people seeking warmth during the day on Monday, Jan. 20.

Those branches are:  

  • Terrazas Branch – 1105 E. Cesar Chavez St.
  • Ruiz Branch – 1600 Grove Blvd.
  • Little Walnut Branch – 835 W. Rundberg Ln.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22, Central Library, at 710 W. Cesar Chavez St. will open an hour early at 8 a.m.

Williamson County

Georgetown

The San Gabriel Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, at 1322 E University Ave., will open as a warming shelter from 7 p.m. - 9 a.m. until Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Taylor

A daytime warming center will be open at St James Episcopal Church, at 612 Davis Street, from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
