Young man shares harrowing tale of escape from Camp Fire
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- As firefighters continue to battle wildfires up and down California, one young man is sharing his harrowing tale of escape from the Camp Fire.
Unfortunately for Tyler Grove and his family, they lost everything. However, they were able to escape, just minutes before their homes became engulfed by the fire.
The Groves live in Concow, a town in Butte County and located right in the middle of the wildfire. Several family members live in the area, and of their homes are gone.
"We didn't grab much," said Tyler, in a phone interview. "There wasn't enough time. As we were leaving, my grandmas garage was on fire."
Tyler, his family, and friend Colton Percifield woke up to smoke Thursday morning. Within hours, they fled as the fire was at their front door.
"That's when the winds really started picking up, and it got really hard to see and hard to breath, but we ended up making it out," said Percifield.
Although Tyler is devastated he lost his childhood home, he is happy they made it out safe.
"It's hard, because you think about all of the things that you lost," said Tyler. "Like, my parents lost things that were passed down from the family, from my great-great grandmother. They lost their marriage license, all of the baby pictures. Stuff that we just can't replace."
Tyler's family might not be able to go back to the area where their home was for about a month.
