12-year-old boy is on a mission to honor veterans

Preston Sharp is just 12 years old. He's made it his mission to ensure veterans are honored daily and not just on certain holidays. The inspiration came to him two years ago, when Preston visited the grave of his grandfather, a U.S. Navy Veteran.

While there, he noticed the lack of flags and flowers on the other veterans' gravesites.

On Saturday several dozen people joined Preston at the Texas State Cemetery to take part in the "Honor Veterans Every Day," mission. They visited around 2,500 graves there. 

Families, friends and living veterans placed a flag and a red silk carnation at each veteran's headstone. Brooke Stevenson heard about Preston's mission and thought it would be inspirational for her family to get involved.  

"They can look at somebody like Preston Sharp and think gosh that guy who is only a few years older than me can do so much and impact so much what can I give to this country?" said Stevenson.

She also brought with her an Air Force Veteran Richard Drury who served our country for more than 30 years. "We need to be reminded constantly of the sacrifices the folks buried here have made," said Drury. The "Flag and Flowers" organization was started by Preston in 2015. 

It has grown since then, with thousands of volunteers visiting more than 55,000 veteran grave sites across the United States. Preston said he will continue to serve veterans for as long as his body lets him. "I'm not going to stop honoring them until I can't bend down anymore," Preston said
