18 displaced in 3-alarm fire in South Austin

A 2-alarm fire that started on a balcony of an apartment unit has displaced 18 people who live in the Cheshire Gardens apartment complex in South Austin.

A spokesperson for the Austin Fire Department told FOX 7's Casey Claiborne that when firefighters arrived Friday afternoon, they quickly got the fire knocked down but it started spreading.

The flames developed and the fire escalated to a 2-alarm fire spreading to the attic.

The building the fire started in has eight units. The fire destroyed two units on the second floor; smoke and water damaged two other units.

No tenants of firefighters were injured.

The Austin Fire Department is responding to a 2-alarm fire in South Austin.

Authorities sent out a tweet Friday afternoon shortly after 3 pm. They tell us the fire is at 2121 W. William Cannon. It has extended to the attic.
