20-year-old with knife shot, killed by APD officer
Crime scene technicians spent most of the day collecting evidence from inside the house where the shooting took place. Photographs were also taken of a patrols cruiser parked out front that apparently was driven by one of the officers involved in the shooting . “This is not any situation that an officer wants to find himself in,” said Interim APD Police Chief Brian Manley.
Police were called to the home on South Glenn street early Thursday morning. A woman told a 911 dispatcher that someone was trying to break in to her house and later said the individual got into the house attacking her and two others with a knife.
“The 911 operator indicated that she could actually hear the suspect chasing them as the complaint was was making this call,” said Manley.
Investigators say the knife wielding attacked was a 20-year-old cousin of one of the women being chased. Police were told the woman with the knife was intoxicated and the attack was triggered by a previous argument.
That loud altercation Thursday morning was not the first time according to Monica Lopez who lives one door down. “Every single day basically they would be out like two in the morning ... there were a lot of people coming in and out it was like crazy,” said Lopez.
The shooting happened inside the home when the 20-year-old and two police officers confronted each other Body cameras recorded what happened. “The suspect comes around the corner and the officers immediately give a command, what sounds like drop the knife, and immediately you can see they are backing up on their body cameras, giving the command to drop the knife, she continues to walk in their direction and at that point one officer fired his weapon and the suspect at that point does go down on the ground,” said Manley.
Investigators are not saying how many shots were fired.
One bullet apparently went through an exterior wall and hit a house next door. The officer who fired the fatal shot was placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard policy with APD.
A large computer system was removed from the house by investigators.
A second knife was also found in the street in front of the house.
