The shooting happened in a remote residential area north of dripping springs - near Hamilton Pool.

Investigators say a little before midnight Monday evening 25-year old Randall Thomas Dorsett broke into a home on Overland Stage Rd.

The homeowner, inside with her children, called 911 when an unfamiliar car pulled into their driveway and a man go out.

She was on the phone with dispatchers when the man tried to come into the front door, and then went to the back of the house where he allegedly broke in. at that point Sheriff Gary Cutler says the woman, who was armed with a 44 caliber handgun, confronted the man.

"The kitchen area at this time was not there were no lights on at the time of the kitchen area it was so dark in there the bulk of the exchange was leave my house she told him numerous times refused she fired one time she was fearful for herself and her children,” said Sheriff Cutler.

Dorsett's wound is not considered to be life-threatening. He is from Round Rock and was recently released from the Williamson County jail after being arrested for aggravated assault of a police officer.

The woman's husband was not home at the time because he was out with friends watching the national championship football game. The three children are 9, 14 & 17 years old.

In Dripping Springs the incident is somewhat shocking. Not that a gun was involved - but that someone would try to break into a local home.

"Around here doesn't surprise me especially the fact that he broke and there was a woman because women dripping tend to have a lot more I guess they can since a lot more danger than a man can and they're shooting around here is insane,” said Chris Fries.

Investigators don't know why Dorsett was in the rural neighborhood. No charges have been filed against the homeowner but the case will be reviewed by the Hays County Grand Jury.
