AFD battles fire and wind in South Austin house fire

“I was just up about to make some coffee this morning when I heard a loud 'bang' explosion so I came out and looked out and saw the house on fire,” said neighbor Troy Eller.

Kelly Gall with the Austin Fire Department says they got multiple calls Friday morning about a house fire on the 6400 block of Spring Fever Trail in South Austin.

“The fire crews showed up on scene, they had a heavy fire coming from the rear of the structure. They began the extinguishment process,” Gall said.

AFD tweeted videos of the flames engulfing the 2-story home. The weather wasn't their side.

“Well the wind definitely doesn't help. We are using some Class A foam. It's a wetting agent, it helped soak down in and get hot spots,” Gall said.

The family's garage door was sitting across the street Friday morning. The Austin Fire Department said they had to saw through it because they heard there were some Propane bottles in the garage. They wanted to make sure the fire didn't get anywhere near them. The fire could have been a lot worse if that had happened.

Gall says everyone in the house got out okay, about 4 people. One of them was treated for smoke inhalation.

“Yeah we're just going to have to pull together as a neighborhood and see what we can do for them,” Eller said.

The Red Cross was on scene to help them out.

“It’s really sad, just fortunate that the fire department got here so quick so the fire didn't move to other houses because they were on the scene in a couple of minutes at most,” Eller said.

Just few reminders since it's very cold in Central Texas this weekend, the Austin Fire Department always says to give space heaters space, keep them away from combustibles, don't use your oven to heat your home and of course make sure you've got working smoke alarms.

The Austin Fire Department says after their investigation the cause of the fire is still “undetermined.”
