'Back To The Future Day' flies into Austin at 88mph
The Back To The Future Trilogy: a beloved tale of a time-traveling scientist and his teenage buddy that you better not ever call a "chicken" or he'll just lose it.
And October 21, 2015 is the day that Marty McFly, Doctor Emmett Brown, and Jennifer Parker arrive in what was considered the distant future back in the 1980's.
But we're here...so where are the hoverboards? Where are the flying cars?
Well regardless of the inaccuracies, on Wednesday, Alamo Drafthouse celebrated "Back To The Future Day" by having several screenings of Back To The Future Part II across town.
They handed out special pint glasses and props. One guy came fully dressed as Marty Jr.
Patrick Maness is only 12 years old, so he wasn't around in the '80s, but he's seen the second movie and knows some things just never came true.
"Hoverboards, time travel, flying cars," he said.
Scott Dorlaque and Gena Castillo run "Great Scott Time Machine Rentals" in Austin. Together they hashed through what did and didn't show up by 2015.
"We don't have enough of vinyl clothing other than just your average rain coat.," Gena said.
"Still waiting for Jaws 30," Scott said.
Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, is still waiting for some of this stuff to come around.
"They're still working on a hoverboard, flying cars, self-tying sneakers," he said.
To be fair, Lexus does have a prototype of a hoverboard. Nike is planning to release those self-lacing shoes soon as well. So what did the film get right?
"Whether the Cubs will win the World Series and fulfill one of the predictions made," Lloyd said.
Whenever you use Facetime or Skype -- that was in Back To The Future Part II. Holograms are a thing. And the concept of a "smart house" of sorts has also become a reality.
"I mean they didn't know it was the internet back then, but it was almost a foreshadowing if you think about it... the way electronics are all tied together," Scott said.
So what the movie got right and didn't get right...it really doesn't matter. As Doc Brown says in the third movie, "Your future is whatever you make it...so make it a good one."
