Bowie HS students get up close look at Black Hawk helicopter

Some students at Bowie High School can now say that they've seen a Black Hawk helicopter up close!

One of the helicopters landed at the South Austin school on December 2 in an event coordinated by district and school officials.

Bowie's Air Force Junior ROTC program and the Texas Army National Guard were also involved.

Some classes got a chance to tour the helicopter and talk with its crew.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 William Black with the Texas National Guard is a 1999 graudate of Bowie and says he was recruited his junior year at the high school.

Black says it was great to be "able to come back...and provide a platform to reach out to these children and inspire kids not sure what they want to do. It's special for me."

Students also learned about the STEM aspects of careers in aviation and emergency rescue.
