Breaion King files lawsuit against APD and City of Austin

An elementary school teacher has filed a lawsuit  against an Austin Police Officer and the City of Austin. 26-year-old Breaion King was pulled over for speeding last June.

Austin Police Officer Bryan Richter made the stop. After an exchange caught on dash cam video Richter pulls King out of her car and throws her down. Another video shows her being taken to jail.  During that ride, Officer Patrick Spradlin made comments about why whites are afraid of blacks.

King was booked for Resisting Arrest but the charges were dropped in January. The lawsuit accuses Officer Richter of using excessive force. King also claims her civil rights were violated after Officer Spradlin made racially-insensitive comments.

The Austin Police Association tells FOX 7 they are not surprised King has filed a lawsuit. In July, when the dash-cam videos were released the APA said "They recognize how incidents like this divide the community and cause mistrust." But they said they'd started a dialogue with community leaders -about how to better "bridge the divide."
