Cap Metro's Downtown station getting overhaul
Cap Metro's Downtown station is getting an overhaul. The new station will be almost double in size and will have enough space for more rail lines and people.
It's just one of the many projects Cap Metro is doing to accommodate Austin's growing population as more people are taking public transportation.
Cap Metro says that the new Downtown station will be basically turned into a "large pedestrian plaza." A plaza that will make the experience for those who choose not to drive better, faster and more efficient.
Riders like Kelvin Urena, who uses MetroRail everyday, is happy to hear there are changes coming especially during peak travel times. Urena says at those times "you feel like a sardine and cramped."
Cap Metro says by adding the new trains and buses, people will be less cramped because the trains and buses will be running more frequently and it will increase capacity as well.
Cap Metro is also adding more services to get more people to take public transportation. Things like free WiFI and express buses.
The agency says it hopes to help alleviate traffic on area roads while also giving people the option of using the time they would've spent driving to either catch up on some work or just relax.
It's going to be some time though before the Downtown station is complete. The project isn't expected to be finished until 2018.
