CLEAT sues city of Austin

CLEAT, or the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, said they will sue the city of Austin.

The organization's executive director said the city is breaking the law by continuing to operate the office of the police monitor.

The office used to evaluate citizen complaints and, monitor "internal affairs" investigations. But, since the city council didn't approve a contract, the Austin Police Department is now under "civil service law" which means the "police monitor's" office no longer exists.

Attorneys for CLEAT said by still operating the office the city has access to internal documents which could violate some people's privacy.

FOX 7 Austin’s Mike Warren and Rebecca Thomas talk to Executive Director of CLEAT Charley Wilkison about the lawsuit.
