Duplex fire displaces seven, fire intentionally set

Seven people are out fo their home after a fire in southwest Austin early Sunday morning. According to the Austin Fire Department, it was intentionally set. Fire investigators believe they know who did it.

"We were just enjoying our breakfast and we heard the paramedics and the police cars go by so we came outside," said Julie Hayes. Julie lives two doors down from the duplex that went up in flames just before 10 on Sunday morning. "We never saw flames coming out, just a heavy amount of smoke."

Julie has lived in the neighborhood for two years now and never imagined she'd see two fires in one week.

"It's been a bit unusual for this neighborhood to have this kind of activity back to back," said Julie.

The Austin Fire Department says Sunday's fire on Hill Forest wasn't an accident. The Austin Police Department had been called to the home at the same time because of a domestic disturbance.

This is the second fire in a week in that neighborhood. According to AFD, the two are not related.

People in the area are being encouraged to use these fires as a reminder to check their smoke alarms.
