A popular delivery app is looking for ways to help its drivers weather skyrocketing gas prices and keep them on the road.

On Monday, DoorDash revealed new initiatives designed to save drivers money at the pump and to put a little extra cash in their pockets.

What we know:

DoorDash detailed two ways to make deliveries cheaper for its drivers. One of them requires the driver to use its debit cards, while the other sends them payments directly.

For the direct payments, drivers are eligible to receive up to $15 per week, which the company estimates is worth up to approximately $1.50 per gallon.

What they're saying:

"Rising gas prices have a real impact on Dashers, especially those who are delivering the most. This program is about giving Dashers real savings at the pump," Cody Aughney, Vice President, Dasher and Logistics at DoorDash, said in a statement announcing the program.

Gas prices keep rising

The backstory:

Gas prices around the world have soared over the past month as the ongoing Iran war continues. In the U.S., average prices are inching toward the $4 mark and, as of Monday, sat at $3.96 per gallon, according to AAA’s tracker

In three states, California, Hawaii, and Washington, drivers are already paying more than $5 per gallon, AAA’s figures show.

By the numbers:

During the relief period, DoorDash drivers who use the company’s self-branded Crimson Visa Debit Card will get 10% cash back. Its statement points out that the return is five-times the standard rate.

As far as the direct weekly payments, DoorDash is promising to give a $5 fuel relief payment to eligible workers who drove 125 miles while making deliveries during a given week, which it estimates saves them around $1 per gallon.

A driver who reaches the 200-mile tier would get $10, while one who tops the 250-mile mark would get $15. At that level, the company claims drivers would likely save around $1.50 per gallon for their deliveries. Based on these numbers, it appears that DoorDash is basing its estimates on a vehicle that gets 25 miles per gallon.

According to DoorDash, the program is set to run through April 26.
