Local street shut down and APD diverts traffic all in the name of love
A street was shut down in downtown Austin, a hotel blocked off, and cops diverted traffic Saturday, all in the name of love.
The reason, Austin resident Jey Ditta was proposing to his longtime girlfriend, Jaqueline Bassett. “I am really, really nervous, at the same time it's the person that I am supposed to be with. I've never thought in my entire life that I would ever find that right person, but I guess God took a little extra time with her,” Jey said.
Jey was surrounded at Hotel Van Zandt by friends and family to help carry out his well thought proposal. The couple who met in Austin, have been together now for 5 years. “I say my spiel and when she says yes, hopefully she says yes,” Jey said as he was giving a speech to those helping with the plan.
The Austin Police Department helped in the proposal as they shut down a small road off of Rainey Street and blocked off traffic. As she was escorted down the road, she was greeted by close friends and given a rose each time. At the end, some of her childhood best friends, her parents, and grandparents were there to help Jey in the big moment.
Jaqueline said she had no idea it was coming. “I am in shock, I am in awe. I can't believe he did this for me; it's the sweetest surprise anyone could ever get. Seeing all my friends and family greeting me at the door, he flew in my best friend from California, that is shocking and seeing him,” she said.
To Jey's relief, she said yes, “I’m in heaven right now, I am in the best place I could ever be,” he said.
