New Central Library opening in Austin

It's over budget and a little overdue but Austin's new Central Library is finally opening. A grand opening celebration is planned for October 28.

The groundbreaking for the new Central Library was back in 2013 and it had been scheduled to be open in 2016.

Facilities Process Manager John Gillum says the new Central Library is twice as big as the Faulk Central Library which opened in 1979.

Gillum also says it's more than just books. The 200,000 square foot building is six sunlit stories tall and has a rooftop garden, cooking demonstration area, special events center, a spot just for teens, reading porches and that's just inside.

Outside crews worked on the trails and build the new Second Street Bridge.

The money for the $125 million project came from a $90 million bond election in 2006.

The grand opening kicks off at 10 a.m. in the Seaholm Great Lawn next to the library on Cesar Chavez. The ribbon cutting is at 11 a.m. and the library will open to the general public at 1 p.m.
