Police release video of man who tried to carjack woman outside Arlington Walmart

A group of people helped stop a man from carjacking a woman at a Walmart. Others rushed to her rescue when she screamed for help.

The attack happened at about 8 p.m. Thursday, in the parking lot of the busy Walmart Neighborhood Market located on North Collins St. in Arlington.

Arlington police say grainy surveillance video from the Walmart shows the would-be carjacker casing the parking lot for ten minutes.

The victim -- a wife and mother -- had just pulled into a parking spot when she was attacked.

Cell phone video captured the Arlington woman's terrifying cries for help.

“Help me, help me, help me.”

What you don't see in the video is the vicious attack taking place in the driver's side seat of the white 2018 Jaguar SUV.

A would-be carjacker tried to pull the woman out of her car.

“He never brandished a weapon, but he had his hand under his shirt acting as if he had a handgun on his person,” said Arlington PD Lt. Chris Cook. “He's scratching her, pulling her by the hair, he rips her from the car. Matter of fact, [with] so much force, part of her hair was pulled from her scalp.”

The woman eventually got out of the SUV, but with the key fob still in her hand, the crook couldn't drive away.

“She was screaming as loud as she could to try and draw attention,” Cook said. “She's just begging and pleading for someone to help.”

Before he could react, good Samaritans who heard her screams came to her aid.

“By then, he's looking around, there was at least six or seven people converging on the car yelling at him to leave her alone,” Cook added.

The guy ran away through the parking lot.

A witness followed him in his car, capturing shaky cell phone video of him running.

That witness yelled out a message: “Hey bro, good luck. Smile for the camera. You’re going to jail buddy.”

The crook ran through a nearby apartment complex and vanished before police arrived on scene.

“He got a real good image of him and we think that may be the break in the case that we need,” Cook said. “Someone is going to recognize his stride, his facial features.”

According to Arlington police, the woman went to the doctor to get checked out. She's shaken up but expected to be okay.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call Arlington PD.
