Six pets killed in South Austin house fire

Six pets were killed in an overnight house fire, according to a tweet from the Austin Fire Department. One person lived in the home, but she wasn't there when the fire started.

Firefighters were called to the house on Delcrest Drive in South Austin around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. The Austin Fire Department said they responded within minutes and say that the home was already heavily engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene.

The fire was knocked down within thirty minutes of being reported.

A neighbor living across the street was the one who first noticed the fire and called 911.

"I got up to get a drink of water," explained Susanne Polk. "I saw orange and I called the neighbor to make sure they were awake and called 911 immediately because she has pets, and we've had fires in the neighborhood before and it's just devastating."

Susanne told FOX 7 that the woman who lived in the home has lived there for 28 years. She recently lost her husband, and had been living with her six pets. Two dogs, two cats, a bird and a large parrot were all killed in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
