Suspicious package near library, fire station cleared

AUSTIN, Texas - UPDATE: The suspicious item has been cleared.

The Austin Police Department has officers on scene in southeast Austin for reports of a suspicious package. The suspicious package is near fire station 24, according to AFD.

According to police, a call came in around 11 a.m. on Monday, July 8 for a report of a suspicious package in the 5800 block of Nuckols Crossing, near fire station 24 and the southeast branch of the public library. Both the fire station and library have been evacuated while police investigate. 

Widen Elementary School and Mendez Middle School, which are both a block away, were placed on lockouts as a safety precaution, according to Austin ISD officials. 

The public is being asked to avoid the area.
