UT Chancellor to resign in 2018

The University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven announced he will be stepping down in 2018 on Friday.

McRaven's chronic health issues and recent illness have been a key factor in his decision to resign, a statement from the Office of the Board of Regents said.

"This decision to transition to private life was one of the hardest I have ever made, but recent health concerns prompted Georgeann and me to reflect on the years ahead and think seriously about things we still want to do as a family," McRaven said in a statement. "While I'm on the road to recovery and am grateful to my UT physicians and the good wishes and prayers of our many friends and colleagues, I believe it is time to segue to several other passions in my life that I'd like to experience, and much of that will also involve teaching and writing."

He became Chancellor in 2015, after 37 years of military leadership. The Board of Regents said while at UT, McRaven helped hire six presidents for different UT institutions and worked to close the gender gap in compensation, among many other things.
