Train derails in downtown Waxahachie, several streets closed

A train derailed in downtown Waxahachie, leading to a cleanup effort and road closures.

What we know:

The city of Waxahachie said the train derailment happened around 11:30 p.m. on Monday.

According to officials with the city, the train is made up of 110 cars. 16 derailed, and 14 overturned.

No one was hurt, but several roads are now blocked. Some restaurants and shops were forced to close on Tuesday due to the road closures.

Some of the cars also carried ethanol. Hazardous material specialists are now at the scene, monitoring it to ensure there is no threat to the public.

What they're saying:

Waxahachie City Manager Michael Scott is asking residents to pack their patience for the next few days.

"They're saying to upright the cars that are down it'll take all day. There's actually been some roadway work that has been damaged. That will take several days to repair and open up those crossings," he said.

Scott said this derailment is different from those they've experienced in the past.

"Not to this magnitude," Scott said. "We've had some derailments before, but very minor, none to this magnitude."

What we don't know:

Union Pacific is still working to determine what caused the train to derail.

It’s not clear how long the cleanup will take. The city’s best estimate was that it would take several days.
