West Texas sheriff puts crosses on back of patrol vehicles

ALPINE, Texas (AP) -- A West Texas sheriff who put crosses on the back windows of patrol vehicles has asked for a state opinion on whether the stickers can stay.
Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson says the decals are not a statement of religious preference. Dodson told KOSA-TV that his deputies have so much ground to cover that he figured they should "ask for all of the help" they could get.
Brewster County covers about 6,200 square miles. The decals, donated by a store in Alpine, are white with a blue line across the center.
Critics raised separation of church and state issues. The Freedom from Religion Foundation on Monday asked Dodson to remove the stickers.
Dodson has asked the Texas Attorney General's Office for an opinion on having crosses on the government vehicles.
