Winter weather causes some slick roads, crashes across Central Texas

Many people who live along I-10 enjoyed the snow from the comfort of their homes, taking the advice of officials to not get on the roads. But some did, causing backups.

What are officials saying?

What they're saying:

"We are still urging drivers to stay home and avoid travel, if possible," TxDOT Austin District Kellen Mohrmann said.

"We did see a lot of snowy precipitation in the Austin area, particularly in the I-35 corridor, the southeast part of our district so that included Williamson County in the north, Travis County, Hays County, Caldwell, Lee, and Bastrop also saw the snowy conditions and we are still seeing that the icy conditions may be still persisting on those roadways and those areas," Mohrmann added.

Austin-Travis County EMS said they responded to 11 crashes before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

TxDOT said they are continuously out treating the roads.

"Right now, temperatures are expected to start rising mid-morning tomorrow, but we're here to continue monitoring. We'll be here 24/7 until we're out of the woods," Mohrmann said.

Local perspective:

"I've been a resident of La Grange since 1975," La Grange resident Sandra Woodruff said.

On Tuesday morning, Woodruff sat outside on her porch.

"I have no business out here, but I’m taking advantage of it," Woodruff said.

She admired something that doesn’t happen often.

"To just see how God can make one minute warm and in the next minute it’s just snowing down, it's a beautiful thing to see," Woodruff said.

With the help of technology, Woodruff was able to show her loved ones the blanket of snow, too.

"I just got off the phone with my grandbabies, and I was facetiming them to try and show them my section. I don't know how to work it, but we managed," Woodruff said.

Woodruff didn’t even have to leave her home, and she encouraged others to stay put, too.

"Stay home. It's just safer to stay home than getting on this road, risking your life, leaving your loved ones behind, just stay home," Woodruff said.
