17 California inmates have now died of what appears to be COVID-19

There have now been 17 COVID-19-related inmate deaths in the state prison system, the department said. All but two involved inmates at the California Institution for Men.

First drug proves able to improve survival from COVID-19

The drug was given either orally or through an IV. It reduced deaths by 35% in patients who needed treatment with breathing machines and by 20% in those only needing supplemental oxygen. It did not appear to help less ill patients.

Florida researchers track COVID mutation that suggests virus is adapting to humans

The changes in the virus are within the spike proteins, which are what allows the virus to bind and infect human cells. The mutation, called D614G, stabilizes the spike protein, making it less likely to fall apart. That's why it's more infectious.
