Weather Facts: Snow events in Austin

In the wake of the East Coast blizzard, Zack Shields takes a look at the history of snow events in Austin. Like how often it happens here and when was the last good snowfall for the area?

Snowzilla left behind two to three feet of snow around the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. For some areas it was one of the biggest snow machines.

They received a season’s worth of snow in just two days. It took five decades to experience this much snow here in Austin.

Snow events don't happen very often around here. Since 1898, in Austin we have seen 52 snow events with a grand total of 90 inches.

The biggest snow storms occurred decades ago. The snowiest days happened late in November in 1937 where 9.7" fell in Austin.

The earliest snowfall was on November 14, 1959 and the latest one occurred on March 27, 1930. Most of the snow events happen in January and February.

Looking at each decade, it's a tie for most snow events. Both the 1920’s and 1960’s had seven snowstorms but the highest snow total title goes to the 1920’s. By the way, only four times we picked up over six inches in a single storm.

We haven't seen much snow lately. Since 2000 we've only seen snow nine times. The last measurable snow fell two years ago and the last big snow event happened on Valentine's Day 2004.
