APD: Do not call 9-1-1 for coronavirus information

The Austin Police Department has taken to social media to remind the public to forgo calling 9-1-1 for information on the COVID-19 coronavirus.

APD's Emergency Communications says they understand the community's need for current and accurate information regarding the coronavirus pandemic, however, people should use other resources when looking for the latest coronavirus updates from the government.

APD instead recommends that the public goes to the City of Austin's website or seek answers to questions on the Texas Department of State Health Services Frequently Asked Questions page. People can also contact Texas DSHS by calling 2-1-1 and selecting option "6" anytime between 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"Any time there’s an immediate threat to life or property, remember to call or text 9-1-1. Call when you can, text when you can’t. APD is here to assist if you need us. #OneAustinSaferTogether," APD mentioned in a tweet.
