APD investigating deadly hit-and-run in South Austin

Austin police are asking the public for help with information and video to help find a driver who hit and killed a person in South Austin.

Police say witnesses informed the driver that he had hit someone but that the driver got back into his vehicle and drove off.

The crash happened at around 8 a.m. at the intersection of South 1st Street and Ben White Boulevard.

Officers say a man in a white truck was in the right turn lane and instead of turning he sped through the green light.

Corporal Chad Martinka with APD said at a news conference that the car jumped the curb and drove down the sidewalk where it hit a Hispanic male believed to be about 41 years old.

The truck then continued and hit a trash can before stopping down the street.

Martinka says the driver exited the vehicle and checked for damages. Witnesses reportedly told the man he had hit someone. The driver then walked back to the scene, looked where he hit someone and then walked back to his truck, got in and left the scene.

The driver is described as a white man in his 50s. He was seen going west on Ben White in possibly a white 2005 GMC four-door truck.

APD says the driver was last seen wearing a black shirt, khaki pants and black shoes at the time of the crash.
