Austin boil water notice not affecting customers up and downstream

The boil water notice is obviously a major concern for Austin residents.

But what about customers downstream?

Residents in Bastrop, Smithville and Fayette County do not have to worry. All municipalities say their water comes from aquifers underground. They are more concerned about downstream flooding, but Bastrop's mayor says they are prepared to handle anything at this point.

“Whenever the city of Austin does something like the boil water notice they issued it can be alarming for folks downstream. Austin, they take the water right out of the river and that's the water they treat. In Bastrop we have groundwater wells and those wells are sealed and submerged,” said Mayor Connie Schroeder.

Residents in Cedar Park, Round Rock and Leander do not have to worry either. Their water comes from the Sandy Creek arm of Lake Travis, which they say was not affected.
