Grandmother in Jarrell hit-and-run dies, driver still on loose

WILLIAMSON COUNTY Texas - Elizabeth Griffet fought for her life for three months before passing away

It's a Father's Day weekend, Natalie Griffet will never forget. Her mother Elizabeth, herself, her infant daughter and 9-year-old son were on I-35 headed to temple from San Antonio. It was in Jarrell when the unthinkable happened.

“We were struck from behind,” said Griffet.

At that moment Natalie Griffet didn't know what to do.

“My son was completely covered in blood. Where he was positioned in the vehicle behind my mom, the backseat had broken off the truck and the driver seat completely broke. When she hit, she came all the way back and it [the seat] landed on him,” said Griffet.

Jarrell chief of police says the driver of that car, is still out there.

“Witnesses say the driver of the Range Rover just walked away,” said Chief Roger Thompson.

The family was transported to Temple-Baylor Scott and White and treated, however Elizabeth's spine was severed.  From June to September, she fought for her life before succumbing to her injuries. There are lots of things Natalie will miss about her mom.

“Her cooking, her calling us to come over and eat and cook,” said a reminiscing Griffet.

A 50-year old grandmother's life was cut short and she was unable to see her grandchildren grow. Each day Griffet hopes the hit-and-run driver can come forward, something she was hoping he'd do when it first happened.

“I told him to come forward it'll be ok and we can figure this out. He didn't do that,” said Griffet.

“Losing Mrs. Griffet, and she's well known in the area, has been a tragedy, especially on something as foolish as somebody speeding,” said Thompson.
